“How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.” — Psalm 119:9-11
This kind of a piggy back on one of my first devotionals, “Why Do We Believe What We Believe?”. We know that we are to build our lives on Jesus Christ, on God Himself, and the truth that we know about Him.
So where can we find this truth about God? How do we change ourselves and “keep (our) way(s) pure”? Psalm 119 talks incessantly about the Bible, the true knowledge of Jesus Christ. (2 Peter 1:3)
“seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” — 2 Peter 1:3
Peter tells us that, thru the true knowledge of God, we have “everything pertaining to life and godliness.” EVERYTHING!
Peter goes on and explains how the truth and the word of God can change us (vs. 5-7) but that’s for another time. Halfway thru chapter 1, Peter confronts those who said he’s been making this all up. Read what he says to those calling him a fake and a little.
“and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.” — 2 Peter 1:18-19
Peter told them, I’m an eyewitness to God’s glory. I was there with Jesus Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration, we find that story in Matthew 17 and Mark 9. Peter’s telling us “I was there. This is truth. I heard this from the very mouth of God come in human flesh! You’ve got to believe me. This is truth!”
Peter goes on in chapter 2 and warns the believers about false teachers, men and women who teach and preach a gospel different than the one that Christ Himself preached.
We have scripture, in our hands, on our phones, we have more access to it now than the believers in the times when the Bible was still being written. It is the holy, God-breathed word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). We’re told in 2 Peter 1:19 (above) “you do well to pay attention.”
Build your life on the word of God. All the truth you need to know is in there. And that’s what we’re studying together.
