“Oh that my ways may be established
To keep Your statutes!
Then I shall not be ashamed
When I look upon all Your commandments.
I shall give thanks to You with uprightness of heart,
When I learn Your righteous judgments.” — Psalm 119:5-7 NASB
This is a prayer of King David. He wrote it in poetry (of his day) but it came from the heart. David understood how wicked and horrible his sinful nature can and did make him. He understood that without trusting in God, he could do nothing right. Even with all the times David failed God, God never left him. And David knew that. David pleaded with God. “Lord, fix me. Set my ways right by Your word.”
David also understood that there could be no shame in trusting what God said. God’s word is infallible. It can’t be wrong. It’s incapable of being false or fake in any way. That’s why David wrote. “When I’m reading and studying what You, my God, have written, I cannot be ashamed. I will not be embarrassed for reading and trusting in something so pure and perfect.”
With an understanding of the power that came from reading and trusting God’s word, what they had of it at the time, David chose to be grateful. The knowledge and understanding that only God can work through God’s words and change our lives should make us eternally grateful.
God is working on us to set our paths straight, according to the scriptures. We have no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed because we read and study the scriptures. So are we thankful for God and His work in us? Are we thankful that we have the scriptures to guide us and teach us right from wrong?
