“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” Matthew 7:24‭-‬27 NASB

What is the foundation of your life?  God is the rock which will never fail. He will never falter. He will never screw up. His plans are flawless. He never breaks His promise and He has promised to always be with you and care for you.  (Hebrews 13:5)

You may find another foundation to build your life on. Some other moral compass. Some other way of life. All other foundations of life are unstable. They change and shift with the times. With each little wave that hits, it slowly dissipates and drifts away with the tide. It will soon falter and fail because the foundation is constructed by man.

C.S. Lewis, in his book “Mere Christianity” talks a little bit about this. He ends his first chapter with the following paragraph.

“These, then, are the two points I wanted to make. First, that all human beings, all over the earth, have this curious idea that they ought to behave in a certain way, and we certainly cannot get rid of it. Secondly, that they do not in fact behave in that way. The know the Law of Nature; they break it. These two facts are the foundation of all clear thinking about ourselves and the universe we live in.”

What are some other foundations that people try to build their lives on?

“It’s the American Way.” Which America? The old one or the new one? The American Way changes every time we elect a new president. It’s fallible.  It’s not perfect by any means, yet people still try to build their lives on “the American way.”

“It’s my family heritage.” Well, mine differs from yours in many ways. Who’s to say that your family or mine had it right all along. With every marriage ceremony, a new family comes into existence, and each one brings in new opinions and ways of thinking.  They bring these traditions from his family and those traditions from her family. They pick and choose which ones to keep and which ones to throw out.  With each new generation, morals and values change.

“It’s the new trend.  Everyone’s doing it.” Yup, and that new trend changes every week to month to year. Just looking at clothes and fashion, we can see how drastically trends change. Please, do not use the newest trends as your guidebook for your life.

Only the word of God is infallible and unchanging. It says the same thing today as it did when it was written. And God’s authority is still behind it today just as much as the day it was penned in its original Greek and Hebrew and Aramaic. Christ is the only secure foundation to build your life on, and your Bible tells you how to do that.  God never changes. He never gives up on a person, especially those He claims as His own.

Build your foundation on Christ, friends, and your life will be secure. Build your life and the truth we find in scripture. Only then can God bless you and use you for His honor and glory.
